Magnetoelastic coupling in the spin-dimer system TlCuCl$$_3$$

We present high-resolution measurements of the thermal expansion and the magnetostriction of TlCuCl$$_{3}$$ which shows field-induced antiferromagnetic order. We find pronounced anomalies in the field and temperature dependence of different directions of the lattice signaling a large magnetoelastic coupling. The phase boundary is extremely sensitive to pressure, e.g. the transition field would change by about $$pm$$ 185%/GPa under uniaxial pressure applied along certain directions. This drastic effect can unambiguously be traced back to changes of the intradimer coupling under uniaxial pressure. The interdimer couplings remain essentially unchanged under pressure, but strongly change when Tl is replaced by K.

The uranium intermetallic compounds UX$$_{3}$$ demonstrate a wide variety of magnetic properties, which depends on the strength of hybridization effect between the 5$$f$$-electron state of U atom and the $$s$$-,$$p$$-,$$d$$-electronic states of X atom. However, there are many uncertainties in the origin of these phenomena. UX$$_{3}$$ systems crystallizes in high symmetric structure, that is cubic AuCu$$_{3}$$ type. Therefore, the neutron diffraction measurement usually gives no conclusive information on the orientation of the total magnetic moment for UX$$_{3}$$ compounds because of their multi-domain structures. In this study we have succeeded to induce the anisotropic domain structure by applying the uniaxial pressure and prove the total magnetic moment of UGa$$_{3}$$ to be along the [011] axis.

Recently, uniaxial stress has been found to be a remarkable tool for tuning the pairing strength in a ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe. A relatively small uniaxial stress applied along the $$b$$ crystal axis changes the superconducting (SC) phase diagram significantly, merging the low-field SC and reentrant SC domes, with a large enhancement of $$T_{sc}$$. The $$T_{sc}$$ increases both at zero field and under a field, reaching 1 K, more than twice higher than at ambient pressure. This enhancement of SC has been shown to be directly related to a change of the magnetic dimensionality, moving the system away from the Ising-type limit, which results in the rapid decrease of the $$H_{rm R}$$. In this study, by means of zero-field $$^{73}$$Ge NMR in the ferromagnetic state, we have investigated the effects of uniaxial stress on the electronic state of URhGe.
